Reform the UN Security Council
The United States’ repeated vetoes at the UN Security Council have blocked urgent action on humanitarian crises, including multiple attempts to call for a ceasefire and aid access in Gaza.
Despite overwhelming support from other members, a single veto has repeatedly prevented the world from responding to human suffering, exposing a critical flaw in the Council’s structure.
UN Security Council Reforms
To address this imbalance, we propose comprehensive reforms of the Security Council which are urgently needed.
Expand Council to 25 members for fair global representation.
Limit vetoes in mass atrocities and humanitarian crises.
Fast-track emergencies in the General Assembly when vetoes block action.
Phase reforms: start with resolutions/commitments, then amend the Charter
These measures will ensure that the UN can respond to crises without being held back by the interests of a single state.
United Power of Mountain People (UPMP)
Soft appeals like “Save the Himalayas,” or “Protect the Himalayas” don’t move power structures; they fall on deaf ears. Hence, to shake attention, we propose the idea of launching United Power of Mountain People (UPMP), a unified and powerful movement which governments and corporations can’t brush off as another campaign.
Initial Suggested Roadmap
· Launch on online presence through a website page or social media handle, e.g. @UPMP
· Invite all activists, NGOs, citizens to join this umbrella movement so as to amplify voices
· Unify these voices through a sign-up form/petition
· Build visibility by encouraging individuals post with the same hashtag #UPMP
· Amplify local voices by reposting local testimonies: villagers, researchers, NGOs.
· Demonstrate unity by releasing joint statements (all signatories listed)
· Shape a vision by drafting a People’s Charter for the Himalayas under UPMP, signed and submitted as one collective.
· Seek global media coverage (BBC, CNN, etc) to highlight the movement
· Create awareness at ground level through events
· File PILs if necessary to save the Himalayas
This is an open invitation for any person who feels the call of the mountains. If you are that person, we invite you to step in, shape and lead this movement.
