Reform the UN Security Council
When the World Needs Action, One Veto Shouldn’t Stop It.
The United States’ repeated vetoes at the UN Security Council have blocked urgent action on humanitarian crises, including multiple attempts to call for a ceasefire and aid access in Gaza.
Despite overwhelming support from other members, a single veto has repeatedly prevented the world from responding to human suffering, exposing a critical flaw in the Council’s structure.
UN Security Council Reforms
To address this imbalance, comprehensive reforms of the Security Council are urgently needed.
Expand Council to 25 members for fair global representation.
Limit vetoes in mass atrocities and humanitarian crises.
Fast-track emergencies in the General Assembly when vetoes block action.
Phase reforms: start with resolutions/commitments, then amend the Charter
These measures would strengthen the Council’s legitimacy, and ensure that the UN can respond to crises without being paralyzed by the interests of a single state.
