Most moon videos reveal dull, grey, surface of the Moon. But when I look through the telescope with my eyes, I see a luminous, golden beauty—with such exquisite form, light and depth.
Is the Moon only what science measures, or is there a dimension of beauty that reveals itself through the experience of the observer?
Maybe, it’s time to move beyond the physical properties of the moon and appreciate the Moon we see, feel and experience.
To present the world what my eyes see through the telescope, I had to use a special filter—because a camera cannot reproduce the way the human eye experiences the Moon through an eyepiece.
And in line with the moon’s mystery, let this special filter also stay a mystery. What a fascinating way to wrap up this beautiful Moonlight for the Soul. :)
Which is the moon’s true identity?
From earth the moon looks glistening to the naked eyes. From the telescope it looks amazingly surreal. But from the camera, when the exposure is reduced, it looks dull, grey, almost sombre…so which is the moon’s true identity?
Here is an excerpt from the book Afterlife of Billy Fingers by Annie Kagan.
"For the first time since I died, I am standing on solid ground. It’s luminous and kind of rough, like uncut diamonds. Think of pictures of the moon’s surface. Where I am, the landscape is also bare and rocky, with craters and hills, but instead of dusty its glistening and translucent. Everything in this jewelled world look like it’s made of crystallised light, even the pink sky."
Look beyond the veil
Maybe there is more than what meets the eye. After all, we live in a veiled world where our eyes perceive less than 1% of the electromagnetic spectrum.
The infrared, ultraviolet, and gamma rays remain entirely invisible to human senses.
It’s quite possible that even the moon’s true beauty is veiled when we go up and close. But when viewed from the spiritual eyes, its luminous.
Look up and gaze at the moon
Someone, somewhere is
looking at it, too.
What if the moon doesn’t want me to see its scars?
Every astronomer reduces the exposure in order to see the details of the moon. Like the rest, I, too was doing the same, but to no avail.
I have a very spiritual and mystical way of looking at things. One day, a thought came to my mind: Julia, what if the moon doesn’t want you see its scars or craters? What if it wants you see it for its warm glow in the night?
The craters we admire are the Moon’s scars — marks left by billions of years of cosmic impacts.
After days of no luck, I smiled and told the moon, "It's ok if you don't want me to see your scars." There are many of us who don't like to show our scars.
Then I asked the moon for permission
Like the native Americans who would ask permission from the mountains to climb, one day, I asked permission from the Creator as well as from the moon to show me whatever it wished to reveal to me.
At this the moon dropped its guard, and I was shown the moon in all its glory. The Moon with its craters is so beautiful!
Understanding my spiritual assignment
It takes time to understand any new assignment. When there are two telescopes at home, I often wondered what is this assignment?
There are already fantastic photos and videos of moon and other planets in astonishing details. What can I add to this?
Then I realized, perhaps my assignment is not just to film the moon and stars, but to reveal their mystical and spiritual dimensions.
To look at the Moon and share my wonder, love, reverence and contemplation.
Perhaps the telescopes were sent so that I could move beyond the standard definition of astronomy to reveal the soul and spirit of all celestial bodies.
PS: Many astronomers use the word 'capture' while filming moon and planets. I use the word 'view', because you can never capture celestial bodies. You can only view, witness and appreciate them.
The deepest underlying reality of everything is LOVE. 🌙☀️
When the moon reminded me that we are all love
After shifting to my new home in May this year, I casually told my nephew about my desire of wanting to buy at telescope since I've always been a star gazer and lover of moon & stars.
The following month, he gifted me a small telescope that, incidentally, his wife had recently purchased.
My first attempts at moon gazing failed badly. Then, after almost a month of spending lonely hours sitting in my gallery with my telescope – the moon revealed its light to me.
I knew nothing about exposure, light. But that night, the universe intervened by making the clouds act as natural filter diming the blinding light of the full moon for me to view its details.
Through my telescope, the moon looks like a cute orangish bun with crusts dangling from the sky. 🙂
During this phase I was going through a low point. Each time I saw the moon – something awakened in me.
I am a person who feels everything at a very deep level – joy as well as sorrow. The celestial gazing made one surprising emotion rise within me – the emotion of LOVE.
The love that I am speaking of is not human love which is mixed with love for family and friends, and hatred for others.
The love that I am talking of is a love that has no space for hatred. I become blissed out, dreamy, as if I am in a trance getting a taste of eternity sitting in my gallery.
The closest reference I can give for this kind of love is the unconditional love of a dog.
And it just proves what I suspected all along. If GOD is LOVE, then the whole universe and all of creation is LOVE.
So, when I look at the moon this close, I am looking at a very pure expression of love. And that feeling stays with me for days.
The feeling that we have forgotten that – WE ARE ALL LOVE.
